  • Start adjusting bedtime routines now – Bedtime routines usually go out the window during the summer. Slowly bring them back now so you are in the swing by the first day of school
  • Schedule medical exams if required for sports or immunization records.
  • Get a family calendar – There will be lots of activities. Put the calendar somewhere everyone can see it and select a color for each family member.
  • School forms, forms, forms – Setup your filing system now, perhaps a folder for each child. Gather all the forms and file under each child as they come in then complete in one sitting.
  • Post your child’s schedule where you can see it.
  • Go through your closets and decide what you need and what you don’t. You probably have leftover school supplies from last year, clothes that haven’t been used and other items just waiting for this year. Take this time to empty drawers of outgrown and worn out clothes. While you’re doing this, you can make you back to school cloths shopping list.
  • What about lunch – will they bring lunch or buy it at school. If they are bringing lunch, set you plan now on daily preparation and lunch containers.
  • Create a “mailbox” for all the school forms your children bring home through the year – Teach your children they must drop their mail into this mailbox. Check the mailbox daily.
  • Setup a homework area.
  • Establish quiet time each night.
  • Contact your children’s teacher.
  • Volunteer at your school – While you may not have time to be PTA Mom or Dad, giving some time to help raise funds allows you to know what is going on at school and meet other parents. It has also been shown to improve your child’s school performance.
  • Discuss goals with your children. Do they want to play soccer? Read more? Join the choir? Work part time? Volunteer at the library? Share some of your goals.
  • Be sure to have some daily downtime to do something fun. Go outside. Play a game. Make dinner together. Walk the dog as a family. Those 30 minutes will make your family happier and bonds stronger.
